How Much Does It Cost To Build A Deck?

Composite decking is a savvy investment. A well built composite deck provides function and form, transforming dull or under-utilised areas into vibrant spaces whilst boosting the overall value of your property.

The key to a stunning, safe and long lasting deck (composite or wood) is selecting the right decking board. Yet the boards only account for 1/3 of the total cost of a deck. Low quality wood or composite decks may save you a small amount upfront, but the long term cost of maintaining or even replacing rotting, termite infested and damaged deck could be devastating.

The average estimate of a deck per SQM can vary based on variables like the size of the deck, complexity of the design, the materials used to build the subframe and any special requirements (eg. fire resistant boards). On average, building a deck will cost:

  • $220 – $260 per square metre for treated pine/Merbau decking
  • $350 – $500 per square metre for hardwood timber or Composite decking

How much does it cost to build a 12X24 deck?

Here is a rough breakdown of an average cost of a deck:

  • 10 square metres: $3,600 – $5,500
  • 20 square metres: $3,800 – $5,300
  • 30 square metres: $4,000 – $6,800
  • 40 square metres: $5,000 – $7,000
  • 50 square metres: $5,300 – $7,200
  • More than 50 square metres: $5,900 – $11,500+

Many of our clients are property owners now replacing rotting timber decking or low quality composite boards with our premium composite products. To understand the value of good quality decking, it’s important to know where your money goes.

The Subframe – 30% of overall budget:

A great deck needs a well-laid foundation, and a big chunk of your money will go into ensuring the support beams, posts and joists are structurally sound and matches the requirements of your board. A sub-frame can be made made from softwood, hardwood or steel depending upon your preference.

Boards – 20% of overall budget:

The decking boards are the stars of the show, yet only account for 1/3 of your total cost. There are 3 main options: Softwood, Hardwood and Composite decking. Within each option, costs vary from dirt cheap to unaffordable.

Fixings and accessories – 5% of overall budget:

Accessories costs between $5 to $12 per SQM. A well designed decking system makes installation faster, saving time and money (we will get to that next soon).

Labour (Subframe and decking installation) – 45% of overall budget:

The biggest expense in building a deck is the labour involved. If engaging a professional, ensure your tradesman is qualified for the job and has a valid licence. DIY is the most affordable route to building the deck of your dreams. With some planning and a bit of research, installing your own deck can save you a small fortune.

How much does composite decking cost?

Before comparing quotes and composite decking prices, it’s important to realise not everything is what it seems.

Board sizes

Before comparing composite decking prices and quotes, check the size of the decking board. Our Solid XS boards are 150mm wide compared to the industry standard of 137mm wide. Our premium NextGen Titanium boards are 5.8m in length compared to the standard 5.4m length boards. In both cases, this means you need less of our boards to complete the project.

Board thickness

Our boards are 24mm and 25mm in thickness compared to most competitor’s boards that are 20mm to 23mm in thickness. Thicker boards mean more durability.

We invented the hidden fastening system currently used by composite decking world wide. Our proprietary concealed fastening system makes installation 60% faster than traditional wooden boards. Every Britedeck order comes with our fixings free of charge – no additional costs, unlike our competitors.

The life cycle cost of your deck is critical when calculating the overall price of your deck. Wood decking, in addition to being susceptible to splitting and rotting, requires yearly maintenance in order to preserve its appearance and structural integrity. A Brite composite deck is maintenance-free, meaning the cost difference of wood vs a composite deck could be almost $2000 a year in addition to your initial building costs.
