Frequently Asked Questions
What is Composite Decking made from?
Composite decking boards (including Brite Composite Decking) are made from a hybrid blend of materials, typically a mix of reclaimed wood fibres and recycled plastics. These materials are combined, then heated to extract any moisture and extruded into boards, often with a protective cap for enhanced resistance to stains, fading, and scratching. This composition makes the boards durable and long-lasting, while also repurposing waste materials. This is a typical feature of wood plastic composite decking.
Does Composite Decking look or feel fake compared to real wood?
No – modern composite decking is designed to closely mimic natural timber. Early generations of composite boards sometimes looked plasticky, but today’s high-end products use deep, realistic woodgrain embossing and multi-tonal color variegation that closely resemble real wood. Brite Decking’s boards, for example, feature multi-tone textures and grain profiles that imitate popular wood species like Spotted Gum or Blackbutt, so your deck looks authentic and inviting. This gives you the natural look without the downsides of wood-plastic composite decking.
Will Composite Decking fade under the harsh Australian sun?
Modern, high-quality composite decking has excellent UV resistance and holds its colour very well. You might see only minimal initial lightening or “weathering” in the first 1–6 months, after which the colour remains quite stable.
Does Composite Decking get hotter than timber in direct sun?
Dark-colored composite decking can become hotter under direct sunlight than lighter-coloured timber, similar to how a dark surface absorbs more heat. However, advanced composite boards are engineered to dissipate heat better. For example, Brite’s NextGen Titanium range uses a heat-resistant ASA cap that helps it stay cooler in the sun. It’s also recommended to choose lighter deck colours ( light greys or sandy oak tones) for decks in full sun, which can reduce surface temperatures compared to darker boards.
Is Composite Decking resistant to termites and rot?
Yes – composite decking is highly resistant to both termite damage and rot. The plastic component of the boards makes them impervious to termites and other wood-boring insects, since there’s no organic wood fiber exposed for pests to eat. Composite decking or wood boards do not absorb water like timber does, which means they won’t rot, warp, or splinter over time. Brite Composite Decking boards remain stable and intact even in climates that are tough on wood decks.
Does Composite Decking scratch or stain easily?
Capped composite decking (like our boards) are engineered to be scratch-resistant and highly stain-resistant in everyday use. Most common spills – wine, food, BBQ grease, etc. – won’t stain the deck if cleaned up in a reasonable time. The tough outer cap means these boards are hard to scratch through normal activities, though they’re not completely scratch-proof. Heavy or sharp objects (for example, dragging metal furniture) could still leave marks. The good news is that light scuffs or surface scratches can often be buffed out or evened out with gentle heating/sanding, but very deep gouges would be permanent. Overall, with a bit of care (like using furniture pads), a composite deck stays looking new for years.
Which is better, Composite or Wood Decking?
Both composite and timber decking have their advantages, and the best choice depends on your priorities.
Composite decking is ideal if you want a low-maintenance, long-lasting solution. It won’t rot, splinter, or warp, and it’s resistant to termites, moisture, and fading. There’s no need for annual sanding, staining, or oiling — just occasional cleaning. While the upfront cost is higher, composites often save money over time because you avoid ongoing maintenance and replacement costs.
Timber decking offers the natural beauty and traditional feel of real wood. It’s often less expensive to buy initially, and it can be sanded and re-stained to change its look. However, timber needs regular upkeep to protect it from weathering, pests, and decay, and may require board replacements over its lifespan.
For most homeowners seeking durability, low maintenance, and long-term value, composite decking is the better investment. Timber can still be a great option for those who enjoy the character of natural wood and don’t mind the ongoing care it requires.
How long does Composite Decking last?
High-quality composite decking, such as Brite Decking, is designed to last 25 to 30 years or more when installed and maintained correctly. Unlike traditional timber, composite boards won’t rot, warp, or splinter, and they resist termite damage and fading. Their capped surface layer adds extra protection against stains, scratches, and UV exposure, helping them stay looking new for decades with minimal upkeep. Many premium ranges also come with long-term warranties — in Brite’s case, up to 30 years — providing added peace of mind that your deck will deliver long-lasting performance.
Is Composite Decking really worth it?
Yes — for most homeowners, composite decking is well worth the investment. While the upfront cost is higher than basic timber, the long-term savings and convenience quickly make up for it. Composite boards won’t rot, splinter, or warp, and they’re resistant to termites, moisture, and fading. That means no yearly sanding, staining, or oiling — just a simple clean now and then.
Over 20–30 years, these low maintenance needs save you thousands in upkeep costs, while your deck continues to look fresh and perform well. Many premium ranges, like Brite Decking’s, come with 25–30 year warranties, giving you confidence that your deck will stand the test of time.
If you value durability, consistent beauty, and more free time instead of weekend maintenance, composite decking is absolutely worth it.
